Is digital technology effectively in the education field?

Technology has been instrumental in offering continued access to education over the past few months. We need to critically ask ourselves one question that is how effective has digital technology been in reaching the almost 1.6 billion students affected by school closures? School doors around the world have been closed for several days to months to minimized the speed of the covid-19 pandemic during this crisis. We have seen an incredible amount of large-scale effort to use technology in support of remote learning at the same time. This crisis has exposes the challenges for technology in education including many inequities starting at the lack of access to computers and the internet.

• Sluggish cross-border movement of students

• Passive learning by students

• Unprepare teachers for online education

•Lack of practical exposure.

Today our education system has gone through a sudden revolution that swaps from teacher class-based teaching to digital education not only in terms of resources and contents but also in terms of E-book replaced hard binding covers. Physical presence has changed into the screen of a tab, laptop. Classroom interaction has been replaced by virtual meetings. The combination of information and entertainment infinity bandwidth digital learning make it more practical applicable and retail able to our life and surroundings in an interesting manner that transition form of teachers class-based teaching to digital education will need multi-task pronged efforts over time.

The perils of online learning:

• Not considerable as a permanent option •Lack of cultural experience

Technology is turning education from teacher-centric education to digital-centric education. Anyhow, electronic-based education makes the education system more pellucid and equal but at the same time, digital sectors need to be balancing coordination between course and content. No one can deny the fact that in such an extreme situation of COVID-19 has only accelerated the adoption of technology to make quality education accessible to everyone.

It clearly shows that the challenges in

ensuring educational continuity does not stop with the deployment of a digital solution for distance learning. We also need to pay close attention that the technology in education will not amplify existing inequalities and not deepen the digital divide. If we don’t do that, students from backward backgrounds will remain shut out of school shutdown, particularly those students who lack the resilience, learning strategies, or engagement to learn on their own.

The UNESCO number on school closure caused by covid-19 illustrated the pandemic’s overwhelming impact on education throughout the world. At its peak, early April 2020, the nationwide closure of educational institutions where affecting over 91% of the global student population. In absolute numbers, this means that nearly 1.6 billion students in up to 194 countries were impacted by Schools being shut down.

It is even more sobering to find that half of the students get out of the classroom by covid-19 close to 800 million students do not have access to a household computer. 43% some 700 million students even have no internet access at home. For the more about 56 million students live in a location that is not solved by mobile networks. These far-reaching impacts of the covid-19 pandemic have given us massive insights into how the role of technology can radically be shifted to reach 1.6 billion students and how to adapt to the learning process in challenging times.

Existing digital learning systems for example can go far beyond the scanty teaching. Empowered by Artificial Intelligence, with these systems we can also observe how students learn. Besides they can discover what kind of task and thinking they are most interested in and what all kinds of problems they finding and facing. These systems only can be adapted for the learning process to accommodate individual student’s learning styles and apart from this the most important of all is that they can do this with much more precision than any traditional classroom setting could ever be achieved. The significance of online educations are:

• Cost effectiveness

• Quality education for all

• Access to everyone irrespective of location

• A wide field and a wider choice of course

• Update knowledge

• Under use data

• No language barriers

• Rise of in blended learning

•  Learning management system to be the new norm

• Improvement in learning material

• Rise in collaborative work

• Expanding learning opportunities

Digital learning which was introduced only a few years ago has been warmly and graciously welcomed by the world, a lot has been achieved in this area but still, the journey is not completed and a long way to go.
